Resumo: The article reflects on the work of collectors of recyclable materials in an open dump in the municipality of Corrente-PI. The work was developed with six families who live in one of the districts of the city of Corrente, where the dump is located. This study is justified by the importance of the role of the collector of recyclable materials for socioeconomic and environmental development. The central question that motivated the development of this analysis was: how do waste pickers analyze the work of collecting recyclable materials for socioeconomic and environmental development? Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze how the way of work of the collectors of recyclable materials, from the economic point of view, as well as thinking about how this work contributes to the preservation of the environment. El trabajo se desarrolló con seis familias que viven en uno de los barrios de la ciudad de Corrente, donde se encuentra el basurero. Este estudio se justifica por la importancia del papel del recolector de materiales reciclables para el desarrollo socioeconómico y ambiental. La pregunta central que motivó el desarrollo de este análisis fue: ¿cómo analizan los recicladores el trabajo de recolección de materiales reciclables para el desarrollo socioeconómico y ambiental? Así, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo es la forma de trabajo de los recolectores de materiales reciclables, desde el punto de vista económico, así como reflexionar sobre cómo este trabajo contribuye a la preservación del medio ambiente. Medio ambiente.O artigo leva a refletir sobre o trabalho de agentes catadores de materiais recicláveis em um lixão a céu aberto no município de Corrente-PI. As reflexões são resultado de um trabalho desenvolvido com seis famílias que residem em um dos bairros do município, onde o agente catador de materiais recicláveis desempenha um importante papel para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico e ambiental. A pergunta central que mobilizou esta pesquisa foi: como os agentes catadores percebem o trabalho da coleta de materiais recicláveis para o desenvolvimento socioeconômica e ambiental?
