RESUMO Oliveira Lima, grande historiador, diplomata, jornalista, membro fundador da Academia Brasileira de Letras. Seu apogeu foi vivido dentro e fora do Brasil durante a “Belle Époque”, que correspondeu nos fastos da República Velha, ao período mais brilhante. Forneceu-lhe o grande palco para sua obra, e trouxe a Europa em peso para o Brasil, num renovado interesse pelos trópicos. Era participante ativo, o mais intelectual e controverso das pessoas ligadas à diplomacia e à sociedade do seu tempo. Viveu largos anos em Portugal, mas passou a vida suspirando pelo Brasil. Sua vida pública começa com a República Velha e quase que acaba com ela. Entrou para o serviço da República como adido da delegação do Brasil em Lisboa. Na diplomacia, exerceu os mais elevados postos sem contudo serem os de maior prestígio, ou ter chegado ele ao cume da carreira. Como homem de letras, publicou importantes trabalhos da história sobre literatura colonial, sobre Pernambuco e principalmente, – sobra a época de D. João VI e o Império. Como historiador, escreveu suas obras com a maior seriedade e sem partidarismos ideológicos. Aos vinte anos era um bibliómano e um literato. Oliveira Lima, the great historian, diplomatist, journalist, member and founder of the Academia Brasileira de Letras. His apogee, was lived in and out of Brazil, during the "Belle Èpoque”, which corresponded the more brilliant period in the annals of the Old Republic. The “Belle Époque” provided him of the big stage for his work, and brought the Europe to Brazil in a renewed interest by the tropics. He was an active participant, the more intellectual and controverted of the persons connected to the diplomacy and to the society of his time. He lived for a long time in Portugal, but he spent his life sighing for Brazil. His public life begins with the Old Republic and he almost finished with it. He started his work for the Republic, as a Brazilian Embassy Attaché, on Lisbon. He carried out the highest charges in diplomacy without being however those ones, of greater influence or even he didn’t arrive at the top of his career. As a man of letters, he published important works of History specially about colonial literature, about Pernambuco and mainly on the epoch of D. João VI and the sovereignty. As a historian, he wrote his works very seriously and without any ideologic partisanship. When he was twenty years old he was a bibliomaniac and a person versed in literature. As a journalist and a social chronicler of national and international subjects, he deserves special mention. Il a vécu son apogée au Brésil et à l’étranger, pendant la "Belle Époque" qui correspond à l’époque la plus brillante de la Vieille République. Elle lui fournit la grande scène pour son oeurvre et apporta l’Europe au Brésil, dans un intérêt renouvelé pour les tropiques. Il était un participant actif, le plus intellectuel, et controversé parmi les gens de la diplomatie et de la société de son temps. Il a vécu longtemps au Portugal, mais il a passé sa vie en pensant au Brésil. Sa vie publique commence avec la Vieille République et finit presque avec elle. ll est entré au service de la République comme attaché de la délégation du Brésil à Lisbonne. Dans la diplomatie il a rempli les fonctions les plus elévées sans que ce soient celles de plus grand prestige et sans qu’il arrive au plus haut degré de sa carrière. Comme homme de lettres il a publié des travaux importants sur l’Histoire, sur la Littérature Coloniale, sur Pernambuco et surtout sur l’époque de D.João VI et l’Empire. Comme historien, il a écrit ses oeuvres sérieusement et sans partis-pris ideólogiques. À l’âge de vingt ans, il était un bibliophile et un lettré. Il mérite une mention spéciale comme journaliste et chroniqueur des questions nationales et étrangères.
