(Under)development, (in)equality and the role of the state

This article debates the issue of underdevelopment and the unique role of the state. In capitalist peripheral countries, economic globalization leads to an overlap of rationalities and deepens the historical divorce between economics and politics, as well as between state and society. Neoliberalism gives a veneer of modernity to the secular dependence of the world market and to the internal structural heterogeneity. Reactions are occurring, so as a process of changing paradigms. However, their outcomes are uncertain. Following aspects are worked out in the article: the historical and logical roots of the state in core countries; the specific role of the state in economically underdeveloped countries; the new configurations of the relationship between society and state, and underdevelopment and inequality in the era of globalized neoliberal capitalism.JEL-Code | F02; H11; O20.
