The valorization of traditional products through geographical indication: the potential of Santa Luzia do Itanhy’s aratu

Resumo: | Aratu is a small reddish color crustacean that lives in mangrove swamps and is incorporated into the cuisine of Northeastern Brazil. This work aimed to examine information and features that could demonstrate the potential of the aratu produced in Santa Luzia do Itanhy for the geographical indication registry. In Brazil geographical indication is regulated by the Law N. 9279/1996. It is one of the few legal instruments in the country capable of protecting traditional knowledge, adding value to products arising from it and contributing to sustainable rural development. The field research focused on aratu fishing in the Rua da Palha village, located in the countryside of Santa Luzia do Itanhy, in the Brazilian State of Sergipe. This activity is carried out mainly by women, who have been performing it for generations through traditional knowledge and practices acquired through inheritance. Although this work concludes that the aratu has potential for geographical indication registry, we also identified difficulties for its viability that can only be overcome through government support.JEL-Code | O18; Q22; R11. |

Este trabajo presenta como objetivo recopilar información y características que permiten demonstrar el potencial del aratu producido en Santa Luzia do Itanhy para el registro de la indicación geográfica. En Brasil, la indicación geográfica está regulada por la Ley Nº 9279/1996. Es uno de los pocos instrumentos legales del país capaz de proteger los conocimientos tradicionales y añadir valor a los productos derivados de este conocimiento, contribuyendo así al desarrollo rural sostenible. La investigación de campo se centró en la pesca de aratu, actividad llevada a cabo por sucesivas generaciones de mujeres de la comunidad Rua da Palha, situada en el municipio de Santa Luzia do Itanhy, a través de prácticas y conocimientos tradicionales. Se han revelado características que apuntan para las potencialidades del aratu para el registro de indicaciones geográficas, así como la existencia de dificultades para su viabilidad, cuáles sólo pueden superarse mediante el apoyo del gobierno.Código JEL | O18; Q22; R11.O aratu é um pequeno crustáceo de cor avermelhada que vive em manguezais e está incorporado à gastronomia do nordeste brasileiro. Este trabalho tem por objetivo levantar informações que possam demonstrar o potencial do aratu como produto tradicional de Santa Luzia do Itanhy para o registro de indicação geográfica. No Brasil, a indicação geográfica é regulamentada através da Lei número 9279/1996. É um dos poucos instrumentos jurídicos do país capaz de proteger saberes tradicionais, agregar valor aos produtos advindos deste conhecimento e contribuir para o desenvolvimento rural sustentável. A pesquisa de campo concentrou-se na pesca do aratu, protagonizada por sucessivas gerações de mulheres do povoado Rua da Palha, situado na zona rural de Santa Luzia do Itanhy, através de conhecimentos e práticas tradicionais. Embora tenham sido reveladas características que apontem a potencialidade do aratu para o registro de indicação geográfica, também se identificaram dificuldades para que esta possibilidade se viabilize, dificuldades que só poderão ser superadas através de suporte governamental.Código JEL | O18; Q22; R11.
