The public library: a determined and decisive role in society

The article is based on the theoretical dissertation in 2004, ECI/UFMG, entitled "The Literary Society of Belo Horizonte: a cultural legacy of the Municipal Library in the city." It presents a brief study on the public library, on a purely contextual, which deals with the functions of that institution, related to the aspects that make up a society - culture, memory, identity and ideology. Thus, we expose how the trajectory of the library can be determined by a dominant political order. Furthermore, we show how it can influence the trajectory of the community where it operates, through the activities of reading and writing that are provided by the institution. This work was performed under an interdisciplinary perspective, with contributions from historians, scholars of the sociology of knowledge and librarians.
