UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND RARE BOOKS: A STUDY ON BRAZILIAN SOUTHERN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

It presents the results of a research carried out between 2017 and 2019, which sought to map the rare bibliographic collections belonging to Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) universities. For the methodology, a bibliographic review was carried out in national and foreign sources for the construction of the theoretical contribution. The southern universities survey was carried out on the e-MEC portal, resulting in 19 institutions. From this list and research on their institutional websites, the managers of the libraries belonging to each of the institutions were identified. For data collection, a questionnaire was prepared containing 16 semi-closed questions, which was sent to managers. From the return of the questionnaires, it was possible to know a little more about the collections, systematizing the answers and showing the characteristics of this important documentary set. The results show that of the 19 institutions in Rio Grande do Sul, 12 have rare books in their bibliographic collections. Of these, 11 participated effectively in the research. The investigation made it possible to find out information regarding the rare collections of southern universities until then unknown to the academy, showing the presence of rich collections that lack investments for their adequate safeguarding.
