Resumo: ABSTRACT: Objectives: This research aimed to identify the existence of myths and beliefs of mothers in relation to care practices with themselves and with their baby at the same time sought to analyze the influence of prenatal care in these practices. Methods: This is a qualitative research, exploratory and descriptive, developed during the months of March and April 2008. Data collection was performed through individual interviews, guided by a semi-structured itinerary, applied through home visits. The research subjects are women who had children less than 6 months ago, and that belong to an area attached to a family health unit of Rio Grande city. Results: The analysis of the discourse revealed that mothers have attended the prenatal consultations, however, they have difficulty in reproducing the received guidance. It was found that, even having received guidance related to care of themselves and their babies, mothers continue to use popular practices, most often oriented by family members. Conclusions: It is realized, therefore, the need to insert the pre-natal care, guidance relating to such practices. More than ever it evidences the need for an association of scientific knowledge to popular knowledge, valuing its knowledge while demystifying practices that may endanger the health of women and their babies.

Métodos: Esto estudio es de enfoque cualitativo del tipo exploratorio y descriptivo, que se desenvolvió durante los meses de marzo a abril de 2008. La colecta de dados fue realizada a través de entrevista individual, guiada por itinerario séme-estructurado, aplicada por medio de visitas domiciliares. Los sujetos del estudio son mujeres que tuvieron hijos hasta menos de 06 meses, pertenecientes al área adscrita de una unidad de salud de la familia del municipio de Rio Grande. Resultados: La análisis de los discursos evidenció que las madres tienen frecuentado las consultas de prenatal, pero presentan dificultad en reproducir las orientaciones recibidas. Se constató que, mismo teniendo prácticas populares, en la mayoría de las veces orientadas por los familiares. Conclusiones: Se percebe, así, la necesidad de la inserción del saber científico a los conocimientos populares, valorizando el saber popular y al mismo tiempo desmitificando prácticas que puedan colocar en rasgo la salud de la mujer y de el RN.RESUMO: Objetivos: Esta pesquisa objetivou identificar a existência de mitos e crenças das mães em relação às práticas de cuidado consigo e com seu bebê, ao mesmo tempo em que buscou analisar a influência do pré-natal nessas práticas. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo de abordagem qualitativa, do tipo exploratório e descritivo, desenvolvido durante os meses de março e abril de 2008. A coleta de dados foi realizada através de entrevista individual, guiada por roteiro semi-estruturado, aplicada por meio de visitas domiciliares. Os sujeitos do estudo são mulheres que tiveram filho há menos de 6 meses, e que pertencem à área adstrita de uma unidade de saúde da família do Município do Rio Grande. Resultados: A análise dos discursos evidenciou que as mães têm freqüentado as consultas de pré-natal, porém, apresentam dificuldade em reproduzir as orientações recebidas. Constatou-se que, mesmo tendo recebido orientações relacionadas aos cuidados de si e do RN, as mães continuam utilizando práticas populares, na maioria das vezes orientadas por familiares. Conclusões: Percebe-se, assim, a necessidade da inserção no pré-natal, de orientações referentes a tais práticas.
