Climate change and the risks of a ecofascist future in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: a historical and ecocritical analysis

Resumo: This article discusses the contribution of The Handmade’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood (1985), and its literariness to the reflection on the political and social risks that climate change can generate, such as the emergence of an eco-fascist political regime. We read the book published in 1985 and the series started in 2017, paying attention to the nature of each one of the productions. We take these products as part of a great media culture, as well as environmental texts that can be seen through historical analysis and ecocritical analysis, in the current context of ecoanxiety. The novel and the series allow us to understand how cultural productions can be important means for understanding how the theme of climate change and the environmental crisis have generated metaphors about the risks of climate change, past and present, and their sociopolitical consequences.

Tomamos notas sobre el libro publicado en 1985 y la serie iniciada en 2017, prestando atención a la naturaleza de cada una de las producciones. Entendemos la obra como un producto de la cultura mediática y como un texto ambiental que puede ser interpretado desde una lectura que articule el análisis histórico y la ecocrítica, en el contexto contemporáneo de la ecoansiedad. El trabajo permite comprender cómo las producciones culturales pueden ser medios importantes para entender cómo el tema del cambio climático y la crisis ambiental han generado metáforas sobre los riesgos del cambio climático en el pasado y presente y sus consecuencias sociopolíticas.Buscamos refletir sobre a contribuição d’O Conto da Aia, de Margaret Atwood (1985) e de suas literariedades para a reflexão sobre os riscos políticos e sociais que a mudança climática pode gerar, tais como a emergência de um regime político ecofascista. Fazemos apontamentos sobre o livro publicado em 1985 e da série iniciada em 2017, prestando atenção na natureza de cada uma das produções. Entendemos a obra como um produto de cultura da mídia e como um texto ambiental que pode ser interpretado a partir de uma leitura que articula análise histórica e ecocrítica, no contexto contemporâneo de ecoansiedade.
