The genus Diploneis in salt marshes of southern Brazil

Resumo: A taxonomic study on the genus Diploneis from salt marshes of southern Brazil was carried out with the aim to identify their morphological and structural features and to verify their distribution in diff erent habitats and salinity zones. The study was based on planktonic, benthic and epiphytic sampling from the salt marshes of Lagoa do Peixe National Park andLagoa dos Patos estuary from 2009 to 2011. Nine species and one taxonomic variety are described with illustrations using light and/or electron microscopy. Diploneis aestuari Hustedt, D. interrupta (Kützing) Cleve, D. nitescens (Gregory) Cleve, D. subovalis Cleve and D. zannii Frenguelli are fi rst reports for the Brazilian salt marshes. Diploneis nitescens was restricted to polyhaline zone, while others occurred in a wider range of salinity. The worldwide geographic distributions of the taxa are also presented.

O estudo baseou-se em amostragens de plâncton e bentos efetuadas nas marismas do Parque Nacional da Lagoa do Peixe e de epifíton nas marismas adjacentes ao estuário da Lagoa dos Patos, no período de 2009 a 2011. Nove espécies e uma variedade taxonômica são descritas e ilustradas em microscopia óptica e/ou eletrônica. Diploneis aestuari Hustedt, D. interrupta (Kützing) Cleve, D. nitescens (Gregory) Cleve, D. subovalis Cleve e D. zannii Frenguelli são primeiras citações para marismas no Brasil. Diploneis nitescens esteve restrito à zona polihalina, enquanto os demais táxons ocorreram em zonas com ampla variação de salinidade. A distribuição geográfi ca dos táxons em nível mundial também é apresentada.Iheringia.
