Palynological catalogue of the family Asteraceae Martinov species in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Among the angiosperms, Asteraceae is the largest family in terms of species number, presenting a cosmopolitan distribution. A hundred forty-three species (distributed in 59 genera) of this family are described in this paper, based on material collected from Rio Grande do Sul State, southernmost Brazil, concerning the tribes Barnadesieae, Mutisieae, Cardueae, Lactuceae, Vernonieae, Plucheeae, Gnaphalieae, Astereae, Anthemideae, Senecioneae, Helenieae, Heliantheae, and Eupatorieae, accompanied by illustrations (photomicrographs and images of scanning electron microscopy). Approximately a third of the species constitutes unpublished records. This contribution helps and elucidates the identifi cation of these species in future works of distinct approach. In general, in terms of pollen morphology, the tribes comprise two groups: the fi rst with grains comporting 3-colporate to 3-porate openings, simple exine, echinate, echinolophate to caveate ornamentation (tribes Lactuceae, Vernonieae, Plucheeae, Gnaphalieae, Astereae, Anthemideae, Senecioneae, Helenieae, Heliantheae, and Eupatorieae), and the second with exclusively 3-colporate, biestratifi cate exine, microechinate ornamentation, without cavea (Barnadesieae, Mutisieae, and Cardueae).
