Resumo: The genera Citharexylum L. and Verbenoxylum Tronc. (Verbenaceae) are woody plants. In Rio Grande do Sul State, three species of Citharexylum occur: C. montevidense (Spreng.) Moldenke, C. myrianthum Cham., and C. solanaceum Cham. including its variety macrocalyx Moldenke. All present large and discontinuous distribution in the State. Verbenoxylum is a monotypic genus of Southern Brazil, its only species, V. reitzii (Moldenke) Tronc., has a distribution limited more to the coastal region. Both genera have characteristics that permit an ornamental growth. Thisstudy presents a geographical distribution, key for identifi cation of these two genera and the Citharexylum species, descriptions, phenological and habitat data in addition to explaining their potential use in landscape.

(Verbenaceae) são arbóreos. No Rio Grande do Sul, ocorrem três espécies de Citharexylum: C. montevidense (Spreng.) Moldenke, C. myrianthum Cham. e C. solanaceum Cham. com sua variedade macrocalyx Moldenke. Todas apresentam ampla e descontínua distribuição no Estado. Verbenoxylum é um gênero monotípico do Sul do Brasil, sua única espécie, V. reitzii (Moldenke) Tronc. possui distribuição mais limitada ao litoral. Ambos os gêneros possuem características que os credenciam para cultivo como ornamental. São apresentadas chaves para identifi cação dos gêneros e das espécies de Citharexylum, com descrições referentes à fenologia e habitat. Incluem-se, também, a distribuição geográfi ca dos táxons, sugestões de seu potencial paisagístico e outros usos.Iheringia.
