Germination behavior in seeds of Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) W.C.Burger, Lanjouw & Boer – Moraceae.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the germination behavior and emergence in green house conditions of two seed lots of Sorocea bonplandii harvested under two temperatures. In addition, in one seed lot, desiccation tolerance was evaluated after 60 days in dry chamber conditions and its longevity during 90 day storage in cold chamber. At harvest time, the seeds presented viability about 100% and germination mean time between seven and 10 days and emergence mean time of 16 days. After 60 days in dry chamber storage the seeds moisture decreased from 53,4% to 10,4% and did not germinate, showing desiccation sensibility. However, in cold chamber storage, the seeds did not presented seed moisture and germination reduction until 30 days, and after three months, the seeds presented viability lower than 20%, showing recalcitrant behavior.
