Resumo: This study represents an contribution to the taxonomical knowledge of periphytic desmids associated to Eichhornia azurea (Schwartz) Kunth and Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms-Laubach. Considering that these algae are scarcely surveyed, especially, in tropical fl oodplains lakes, we accomplished monthly samplings from April 2002 to March 2003, in two sampling stations, at Coqueiro Bay, located in Pantanal de Pocone, Mato Grosso State. We identifi ed 47 taxa, distributed among 13 genera. The most representative genera were Cosmarium and Euastrum, respectively. Furthermore, eight new occurrences were recorded for Mato Grosso State. In general, the species occurrence was ascribed to some environmental characteristics (especially slightly acidic water with reduced electrical conductivity) that favored the development of this group. Besides that, the specimens presented inferior measurements than those described in the literature, probably, as a strategy to optimize the nutrient assimilation.

Considerando que essas algas são escassamente estudadas, sobretudo em lagoas tropicais de planícies de inundação, foram realizadas coletas mensais de abril de 2002 a marco de 2003, em duas estacoes de amostragem, na baia do Coqueiro, localizada no Pantanal de Pocone, Mato Grosso. Foram registrados 47 taxons, distribuídos em 13 gêneros. Os gêneros mais representativos foram Cosmarium e Euastrum, respectivamente. Além disso, oito novas ocorrências foram registradas para o estado de Mato Grosso. De maneira geral, a ocorrência das espécies foi atribuída a algumas características do ambiente (especialmente em aguas levemente acidas com reduzida condutividade elétrica) que favoreceram o desenvolvimento do grupo. Além disso, constatou-se que os espécimes apresentaram medidas inferiores as descritas em literatura, provavelmente, como estratégia para otimizar a absorção de nutrientes.Iheringia.
