Resumo: Leaf extracts were prepared with the solvents hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol, and water, evaporated, and the precipitates were resuspended in water for the experiments. Soil samples were sterilized by autoclaving. Seedlings of radish and sorghum were grown on sterilized and non-sterilized soil, each one receiving the test solutions. For radish, the inhibition of root growth was greater in sterilized than in non-sterilized soil, suggesting the soil microbiota reduces phytotoxicity of the extracts. For sorghum, the inhibition of root growth was greater in sterile than in non-sterile soil for seedlings incubated in aqueous extracts, however, it was lower for seedlings incubated in extracts prepared with organic solvents. For both species the soil microbiota reduced the phytotoxicity of aqueous extracts, but its effects on the phytotoxicity of extracts prepared with organic solvents depends on solvent polarity and the target-species used.

Coville. Iheringia.
