Myrsine parvifolia A. DC. is a bush or small tree characteristic of the Brazilian sandbank, important in restoration projects, for being a pioneer and developing well in sandy soils. The species produces fruits throughout the year, a source of food for dispersers. However, its seeds have dormancy, which has hindered its propagation. So, maturity, overcoming dormancy, and growth of root evaluations were conducted. Embryo maturity and mechanical (EM) and chemical (EQ) scarifi cation were assessed and seedlings’ root growth were measured. It was observed that embryo maturity was completed in April, despite the fact that fl owering had begun in October. EM appeared signifi cantly more effi cient than EQ, when comparing the mean germination each month. EM in April was the most effi cient treatment to overcoming dormancy as well as to obtaining higher initial root growth.
