Vertical distribution of epiphytic ferns in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest in the Brazilian Northeast.

Resumo: This study aimed at investigating the vertical distribution of epiphytic ferns in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil, from of 43 phorophytes with DBH ≥ 40cm. Ferns were studied by climbing the phorophytes, which were divided in three height intervals (I- until 3.0 m of the soil; II- 3.0 m until the base of the canopy; III- canopy). We found 16 species of phorophytes with 16 species of ferns. The family Polypodiaceae had higher species richness (10 spp.). Most species (87.50%) were habitual holoephiphytes. The number of ferns by phorophyte ranged from one to eight species. Species richness differed among intervals, higher in intervals II (15 spp.) and III (nine spp.). There were no differences in species composition among the intervals. This research demonstrated the importance of conserving several phorophytic species for maintenance epiphytic fern diversity.

As samambaias foram estudadas por meio de escaladas nos forófi tos, divididos em três intervalos de altura (I- até 3,0m do solo; II- 3,0m até a base da copa; III- copa). Foram registradas 16 espécies de forófi tos, onde ocorreram 16 espécies de samambaias. A família Polypodiaceae apresentou maior riqueza específi ca (10 spp.). A maioria das espécies (87,50%) foram holoepífi tas habituais. O número de samambaias por forófi to variou de uma a oito espécies. A riqueza específi ca apresentou diferenças entre os intervalos, sendo maior nos intervalos II (15 spp.) e III (nove spp.). Não houve diferenças na composição de espécies entre os intervalos. Esta pesquisa demonstrou a importância da conservação de diversas espécies de forófi tos para manter a diversidade local de samambaias epífi tas.Iheringia.
