Resumo: | Introduction: Many individuals are dissatisfied with the current color of their teeth and in this context the search for white teeth stands out. However, due to the high cost of dental whitening treatment in offices, some products called “over the counter” (over-the-counter products in pharmacies or supermarkets) that promise to whiten teeth without much effort, such as whitening toothpastes and whitening mouthwashes, are available on the market, with several active principles, composed of several substances that are used in association with the toothbrush. But, are there really whitening chemicals in these toothpastes? Objective: To analyze whitening toothpastes available on the market, in order to evaluate their chemical composition and verify the existence of whitening substances in their formulation, in order to assess whether these products are effective in whitening teeth. Method: Observational study, the choice of collection sites was made for convenience and the study sample was randomly selected. A table was prepared for the identification of each product, according to its label, containing collection date, sample number, dentifrice classification, brand and whitening agents listed. Data analysis was performed according to Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method. Results: 21 toothpastes were collected, 8 of which were commercial brands. Among the 21 analyzed toothpastes, 90.4% of the analyzed toothpastes only had abrasive substances in their composition, and those that presented whitening substance (9.5%), the substance found was 1% hydrogen peroxide. The main abrasives found in the samples were hydrated silica (90%), followed by titanium dioxide and sodium bicarbonate, both with 38% and Mica (23.8%). Conclusion: Most of the analyzed toothpastes, which claim to have a whitening effect, do not contain effective whitening substances in their composition. Instead, the whitening effect is achieved through the use of abrasive agents. |

Specialized Dentistry Group2023-10-18info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/69210.36557/2674-8169.2023v5n5p1264-1279Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 5 No. 5 (2023): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 1264-1279Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 5 Núm. 5 (2023): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 1264-1279Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; v. 5 n. 5 (2023): BJIHS QUALIS B3; 1264-12792674-8169reponame:Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciencesinstname:Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)instacron:GOEporhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/692/831Copyright (c) 2023 Ayla Bida Veloso, Priscila de Sousa Varão, Giselle Maria Ferreira Lima Verdehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessVeloso, Ayla BidaVarão, Priscila de SousaLima Verde, Giselle Maria Ferreira2023-10-18T20:41:04Zoai:ojs.bjihs.emnuvens.com.br:article/692Revistahttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihsONGhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/oaijournal.bjihs@periodicosbrasil.com.br2674-81692674-8169opendoar:2023-10-18T20:41:04Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences - Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)false |
