Introduction: With the creation and expansion of large urban centers, the production and accumulation of waste increased exponentially, being dumped in areas far from urban centers, interfering with society's quality of life. Therefore, incorrect disposal of MSW causes public health problems with a high rate of hospitalization and leads to the contamination of environmental resources. Objective: To report the experience of an extension project on the management of household solid waste. Materials and methods: This is an experience report of an extension project entitled Rua Limpa, Comunidade Feliz: Promoção da Saúde na Gestão dos Residuos Solidos Domiciliares, carried out by medical students at a public university in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Pará. Results: During the period from March 2022 to March 2023, 233 home visits were carried out in four peripheral neighborhoods with guidance and expository dialogue on the risks of transmitting diseases caused by the accumulation of inadequate waste in homes and vacant lots, management household waste and its relationship with disease prevention. Conclusion: Inadequate disposal of household waste has been a recurring problem in peripheral neighborhoods, in this sense, the extension project enabled the development of participants' autonomy and skills through health education, in addition to offering alternative measures for waste management households, thus avoiding contamination of the environment and preventing diseases.
