Resumo: | Bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective and sustainable approach for obesity control, yielding not only significant weight loss but also notable improvements in associated conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension. In this article, we conducted a comprehensive review of recent literature, examining both the observed benefits and complications associated with this therapeutic intervention. Numerous studies consistently highlight the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in achieving significant and enduring weight loss. This weight reduction is not only linked to aesthetic improvements but also remarkably optimizes metabolic health, often resulting in improved insulin sensitivity and, in many cases, complete remission of conditions like type 2 diabetes. However, the widespread implementation of this technique is not without challenges. Complications associated with bariatric surgery require careful analysis to guide clinically informed practices. Issues such as nutritional deficiencies, surgical complications, and psychological adjustments are crucial aspects to consider. Nutritional deficiencies, for example, can manifest due to changes in nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, necessitating adequate monitoring and supplementation. Gastrointestinal complications may also arise, requiring specialized management to ensure the long-term health of patients. Additionally, psychological repercussions, such as changes in body image perception and adaptation to a new dietary routine, warrant attention to ensure the mental and emotional well-being of individuals undergoing bariatric surgery. A comprehensive understanding of these complications is crucial to inform clinical decisions and optimize long-term outcomes. The significance of post-operative multidisciplinary follow-up, involving medical teams, nutritionists, and mental health professionals, is emphasized to mitigate risks and provide comprehensive support to patients. In summary, this study aims to provide a balanced perspective on the effects of bariatric surgery, recognizing both substantial benefits and associated challenges. The goal is to inform clinical practice and promote a careful and personalized approach for patients considering or undergoing this intervention. |

The goal is to inform clinical practice and promote a careful and personalized approach for patients considering or undergoing this intervention.
