The objective of the work is to demonstrate the intervention of Respiratory Physiotherapy for Pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, in addition to identifying the characteristics of the Intensive Care Unit related to Mechanical Ventilation; describe aspects of Pneumonia related to Mechanical Ventilation; and address the benefits of respiratory physiotherapy in ICU patients. MV is a therapeutic measure widely used in ICUs to save the lives of those in critical condition. However, this intervention can also be harmful to patients, and can trigger VAP, for example, becoming one of the most common complications. The presence of tracheal tubes in the MV contributes to the development of VAP, as it reduces the effectiveness of the natural defense mechanisms of the upper airways and lungs, in addition to impairing the cough reflex and allowing the access of microorganisms. In ICUs, respiratory physiotherapy is a specialty in relation to the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory diseases, in which the results of using this procedure increase the life expectancy of patients. Respiratory physiotherapy reinforces lung volumes in mechanically ventilated patients to facilitate alveolar recruitment and elimination of bronchial secretions, reducing the risk of sudden or progressive occlusion. Therefore, physiotherapy can be an effective tool in the adoption and management of non-pharmacological measures that act to prevent VAP.
