Resumo: Dental fluorosis is an aesthetic anomaly resulting from disturbances in the genesis of tooth enamel. Fluorides are essential in the fight against caries, and are potentially the cause of fluorosis, which has sparked debate on the subject. It is during amelogenesis that the presence of topical fluoride in high quantities and for a prolonged period of time affects the chemical balance, interfering with the final amount of proteins, leaving the enamel porous and prone to acquiring disharmonious coloration, in which the severity will follow the intensity of the adverse factors. The aim of this study was to report, through an analytical literature review, the concepts pertinent to dental flourosis, from its etiology to its treatment, valuing uncontroversial opinions and confronting dissent. All social actors must be made aware of the need for controlled consumption of fluoridated items as a preventative measure. There is also treatment for all degrees of amelogenesis, ranging from tooth whitening to the implantation of veneers or contact lenses.
