IMPACTS OF NEUROMUSCULAR ELECTROSTIMULATION ON PATIENTS ADMITTED TO ICU

Resumo: The general objective of this review is to verify the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU). To carry out the study, a search was carried out in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scielo databases, using the keywords: transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Subsequently, scientific articles were selected with a time frame from 2013 to 2023, regardless of the language of publication. Five studies were selected that were directly related to the topic and that met the inclusion criteria. It was found that electrical stimulation divides opinions in the scientific community, some authors showed, through detailed analysis, among other findings, that the practice improves pain and contributes to the reestablishment of gait. However, there are still few randomized clinical studies that indicate intensive application.

Para a realização do estudo foirealizadaumabuscanasbasededadosPubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Scielo, usado aspalavras-chave: estimulação elétrica nervosa transcutânea e Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). Posteriormente, foram selecionados artigos científicoscom recorte temporal de2013a2023, independentemente do idioma de publicação. Foram selecionados 5 estudos que tinham relação direta com o tema e que atendiam aos critérios de inclusão. Chegou-se à constatação de que a eletroestimulação divide opiniões no meio científico, alguns autores mostraram, através de análise minuciosa, entre outros achados, que a prática melhora a dor e contribui para o reestabelecimento da marcha.
