Trigeminal nerve neuralgia is an acute orofacial and paroxysmal pain circumscribed to one or more branches of the fifth cranial nerve, often of unknown etiology. Alternative therapies include botulinum toxin, lidocaine and calcitonin. Conventional therapy has side effects that often lead to treatment failure, so new avenues of drug treatment are being explored to overcome the barriers of conventional therapy. The individuality of the patient and the risk-benefit ratio are factors that need to be taken into account in order for treatment to be successful and adherent. The present work is based on literature reviews in the database limited to recent academic databases published in the last four years, with a literature review of 29 articles in order to cover drugs that may be effective in treatment. Among the drugs in the pharmacological base studied, antiepileptic drugs were considered the main drug treatment.
