Rehabilitation for elderly people in the Amazon with a stroke: overcoming complications and their associated challenges.

Resumo: There have been many advances in the management of cerebrovascular diseases. However, stroke is still a major cause of disability and mortality worldwide, with a significant socioeconomic burden. This review summarizes the consequences of stroke in the elderly, predictors of stroke rehabilitation outcomes, the role of rehabilitation in neuronal recovery, the importance of stroke rehabilitation units and the types of rehabilitation resources and services available in Amazon. We also present the challenges faced by elderly stroke survivors on the local scene and propose strategies to overcome barriers to rehabilitation in this aging population.
