NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OF PERI-IMPLANTITIS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

The peri-implant disease is an inflammatory condition that affects the tissues around a dental implant. Peri-implant conditions are divided into peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Peri-implant mucositis is an inflammation of the soft tissues around dental implants. On the other hand, peri-implantitis is a form of periodontitis that affects the supporting tissues around dental implants, resulting in bone loss around the implant. It is caused by the presence of harmful bacteria that accumulate on the implant surface, resulting in inflammation and bone loss around the implant. The objective of this study was to conduct a literature review on the non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis, which typically involves the removal of accumulated bacteria and decontamination of the implant surface. Non-surgical treatment is performed through procedures such as scaling with ultrasonic and air-abrasive devices, laser therapy, local antimicrobial agents application, use of systemic antibiotics, and probiotics. In conclusion, non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis may not be sufficient for advanced cases of the disease, and surgical intervention may be necessary to restore implant health and prevent implant loss.
