Dental Agenesia and its management in pediatric patients: a literature review

Resumo: Agenesis is a developmental defect with a multifactorial etiology characterized as the lack of a tooth bud. Review the literature on the best rehabilitation alternatives for patients with agenesis in pediatric dentistry. An integrative literature review was carried out following the PRISMA Declaration Guidelines, using the Virtual Health Library VHL and PubMed Medline database, using the keywords indexed in the DECs Health Sciences descriptors: “dental agenesis”, pediatric dentistry” and “treatment”. From the 234 articles found, 17 studies in English and one article in Portuguese were included in this literature review. There was a high prevalence of studies focused on the treatment of tooth agenesis in syndromic patients. Furthermore, from the analysis by treatment outcome, it was found that the most used dental management in pediatric dentistry for agenesis is dental prosthesis (22.22%). The treatment most used to treat the lack of tooth germ in pediatric patients in the studies included was dental prosthesis associated, or not with the specialties of orthodontics and surgery, to maintain the creation of spaces, and dentistry, to improve the aspects of the underlying teeth or even increase the width of adjacent teeth to close edentulous spaces.

Realizou-se uma revisão integrativa de literatura seguindo as Diretrizes da Declaração PRISMA, utilizado a base de dados da Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde BVS e PubMed Medline, por meio das palavras-chave indexadas nos descritores em Ciências da Saúde DECs: “dental agenesis”, pediatric dentistry” e “treatment”. A partir dos 234 artigos achados, 17 estudos no idioma inglês e um artigo no idioma português foram incluídos nessa revisão de literatura. Houve uma alta prevalência de estudos pautados no tratamento de agenesia dentária de pacientes sindrômicos. Além disso, a partir da análise por desfecho de tratamento, constatou-se que o manejo odontológico mais utilizado em odontopediatria para agenesia, é a prótese dentária (22,22%).
