Resumo:   The use of forage to feed horses is the most abundant and economically viable way to feed horses. The main forages used are those of the genus Cynodon, Brachiaria, Panicum, Digitaria and Pennisetum, in addition to some legumes, such as alfalfa. The food can be offered to animals through direct grazing, weeding or haymaking. Some aspects must be taken into consideration when choosing roughage, such as nutritional potential, adaptation to local climatic conditions, soil fertility requirements, growth habit, palatability, presence of toxic principles (oxalates and nitrates), resistance to diseases and pests. Horses are herbivorous animals, therefore, roughage must be in their diet, ensuring the correct functioning and development of the animal's metabolism.
