Resumo: Breastfeeding is the process by which the infant receives milk from its mother and according to the World Health Organization in agreement with the Ministry of Health, this should occur exclusively until the first six months of life. In addition, the "Neonatal Intensive Care Units" were created and adapted with the aim of offering assistance to premature newborns and other needs related to this public. In this way, it is necessary to know what the current literature presents about the factors that can directly influence the effectiveness of breastfeeding within the Intensive Care Units of Brazil and how public health initiatives, aimed at this, influenced the rates related to the maternal and newborn health. The present study is an integrative, retrospective and secondary review, through the guiding question "How does nursing care in breastfeeding occur for newborns assisted in intensive care?", using descriptors registered in the "Descriptors in Sciences of Health" and submitted in various official databases. Thus, emphasizing the importance of nursing care during the breastfeeding process in the conditions of the child hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, highlighting the numerous benefits for the binomial mother and child.

Além do mais, as "Unidades de Terapia Intensiva Neonatais" foram criadas e adaptadas com o intuito de oferecer assistência ao recém-nascido prematuro e outras necessidades relacionadas a esse público. Dessa forma se faz necessidade saber o que a literatura atual vigente apresenta sobre os fatores que podem influenciar diretamente na efetivação do aleitamento materno dentro das Unidades de Terapia Intensiva do Brasil e como as iniciativas da saúde pública, voltadas para este, influenciaram nas taxas relacionadas à saúde materna e neonatal. O presente estudo trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, retrospectivo e secundário, através da questão norteadora “Como ocorre a assistência de enfermagem no aleitamento materno a recém-nascidos assistidos na terapia intensiva?”, utilizando de descritores cadastrados nos "Descritores em Ciências da Saúde" e submetidos em diversas bases de dados oficiais.
