Resumo: | Tuberculosis is an infectious contagious disease that is still a major public health problem in Brazil. It has cure and the treatment is provided by the SUS; however, the treatment is long and requires a lot of attention from the patients and the health team. Several factors contribute to patients abandoning treatment, which makes it difficult to control this disease. This study aimed at describing the epidemiological profile of cases of abandonment of tuberculosis treatment in the Northeast region of Brazil from 2015 to 2017. This is a descriptive and exploratory ecological study conducted by means of data collection available in the Aging and Notification Information System (SINAN). Sociodemographic and clinical variables were used for abandonment cases to estimate both the absolute and the relative frequencies and to estimate abandonment rates in the states of the region. There were 7,861 cases of cessation of tuberculosis treatment in the Northeast region during the study period, with an average abandonment rate of 11%. The profile of the individuals that abandoned treatment were: male, brown, with ages ranging from 30 to 49 years, medium to low level of education, and patients that presented the pulmonary form of the disease. The Northeast is far from reaching the goal recommended by the WHO to control tuberculosis. Knowing the epidemiological profile of people that abandon treatment and, therefore, vulnerabilities, is important for vigilance actions and projects aimed at this population. |
