Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the level of education and the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the municipalities of the metropolitan region of Recife (state of Pernambuco). The study consisted of an exploratory work based on secondary data, evaluating the spatial distribution of the grievance and statistically analyzing the variables addressed. A strong, inversely proportional, correlation was identified between the number of reported cases and the rate of illiterate individuals, and the number of individuals with complete high school and college education was strongly associated with the amount of accumulated cases in the city. No statistically significant association was identified between schooling and the rate of deaths resulting from COVID-19. Moreover, the demographic density, the means of entry of SARS-CoV-2 in the state, the easier access to testing and to treatment for individuals with higher purchasing power, and the local hospital infrastructure were identified as possible social determinants of health related to the level of education associated with the dissemination of the disease and deaths. Note that the methodology used presents limitations in the inference of cause and effect, thus, to elucidate the problem, further studies on the subject are needed.
