Resumo: The irrational use of antibacterial drugs caused microorganisms to develop defenses, and, consequently, resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prescriptions of antibacterial drugs covered by a Family Health Strategy (FHS). Patients were included based on the list of prescriptions dispensed in the period of one year. Data on medication, patient characteristics and, in a subsample, treatment adherence were analyzed. Of the 1,909 prescriptions retained in the FHS pharmacy, 635 were intended for the use of antibacterial drugs. There was a 15% prevalence of antibacterial use. The prescriptions were aimed at 476 patients, with a predominance of women (70.6%). Regarding the patients’ age group, the following distribution was observed: 21.9% between 0 and 12 years, 5.8% between 13 and 17, 58% between 18 and 59 and 14.3% with 60 years or more. In total, 22 types of antibacterial drugs were prescribed. Non-adherence to treatment was observed in 61% of the patients in the subsample. The results of the study were disclosed to the Family Health Strategy team, the Local Health Council and the municipal management to promote actions aimed at the rational use of medicines, the correct use and adherence to treatment.
