This article aims at discussing the strategies, limits and advances for health planning and programming in a Family Health Unit (FHU), considering the contributions of the cooperation project of the Multiprofessional Residence with the Municipal Health Department of Salvador. This is a descriptive and qualitative study, for which a semi-structured interview script was applied, identifying strategies, limits and advances before and after an intervention project in a FHU. The results were discussed based on referential and studies on Health Planning and Primary Health Care. The strategies for reaching planning before and after the pilot project were very close; however, new strategies were identified, such as planning with the Nucleus for Family Health Support (NFHS) team and the use of planning tools. After applying the project, some limits remained, such as material, human and financial resources. The advances pointed out by the participants were the execution of planning with the involvement of professionals, engagement and understanding between the team and NFHS. The insertion of the Residence was a factor that contributed to the advance of the FHU health planning towards the understanding of the planning, the improvement of the teams’ commitment, the organization of the services provided and the mobilization.
