Social determinants and mortality from tuberculosis in Brazil: a literature review

Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease that affects the lungs, being the leading cause of death by a single infectious disease agent worldwide. Some studies have found an association between the social determinants of health and the occurrence of tuberculosis. However, there are no reports of reviews that have assessed the relationship between the social determinants of health and mortality from tuberculosis in the Brazilian population. This study aimed to describe the main social determinants related to tuberculosis mortality in the Brazilian population. We conducted a narrative review in the MEDLINE, Lilacs, Scielo, and Web of Science databases. Advanced age, low income, low education, and HIV and tuberculosis co-infection were the main determinants of tuberculosis mortality in Brazil. Undesirable drug interactions, the difficulty for the elderly to report the symptoms of the disease, abandonment of treatment, and inequalities in access to health systems are some of the causes that are related to social determinants and mortality from tuberculosis. Our findings showed that advanced age, HIV and tuberculosis co-infection, low income, and low education were the social determinants most related to tuberculosis mortality. Public policies should be directed at individuals who are more vulnerable to tuberculosis and more likely to die from the disease.
