MICROBIOLOGICAL QUALITY OF RIACHO MACARRÃO, TRIBUTARY OF THE SÃO FRANCISCO RIVER, IN JUAZEIRO, STATE OF BAHIA

In the city of Juazeiro, state of Bahia, several tributaries of the São Francisco River are used as open sewage channels, which flow into the river without proper treatment. This practice, besides the environmental damage, puts the population’s health at risk, since contact with contaminated water is a risk factor for the development of various diseases due to contact with pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, since there is no limitation of access by animals and the community to these environments, this study aimed at assessing the microbiological quality of the waters of the Riacho Macarrão and the waters of the São Francisco River that are under the influence of the tributary. For such purpose, water samples were evaluated for the presence and quantification of thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli using the multiple tube technique. According to the current resolutions, the results indicated that the analyzed waters are unsuitable for use due to a high coliforms concentration and the direct incidence of sanitary effluents, endangering the health of the population that lives in their surroundings. Considering the risks associated with contaminated environments contact, implementing recovery programs for these waters and monitoring programs for these environments is necessary.
