Analysis of the goals scored by the finalist teams of CONMEBOL Libertadores and UEFA Champions League (2017-2020)

Football, as Collective Sports Game of invasion, has, in the goal, whether in search of it or to avoid it, the guiding moment of a match. In the context of high performance of practice, the analysis of game and performance, individual and collective, has been leaning, in an increasingly sophisticated way, in the interpretation of the modus operandi of goal construction, aiming to achieve the main logic of the modality: doing them outnumbered the opposing team. Thus, the study excelled in statistically describing and comparing the nature of the goals scored by the champion and runner-up teams of the most prestigious professional football competition in South America, CONMEBOL Libertadores, and Europe, the UEFA Champions League. All goals scored by the finalists in these competitions between 2017 and 2020 were analyzed by video. For statistical analysis, the Chi-square test was used for descriptions and comparisons of goals scored between the predominant forms in different editions of each of the competitions - and between them. In general, goals via exchanges of passes predominate among the finalist teams in the verified competitions, with greater prominence in the European event. Although with a downward trend, set pieces continue to be an important resource for achieving goals among the most successful South American teams in recent years.
