Methods and techniques for identification of football talents: a systematic review

Resumo: Identifying, selecting and developing talented young players can ensure the sporting and financial success of football clubs. In this context, the objective of this study was to develop a systematic review of the literature, looking for studies related to the identification and selection of talents in the basic categories in football, highlighting the main methods and techniques used in the identification and selection process. This review followed the methodological recommendations of the PRISMA methodology. The following descriptors were used: soccer talent, physical education, training, athletic performance and ability. Searches were performed in the databases Web of Science, SCOPUS, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SportDiscus, SciELO. A total of 1,254 studies were found and, at the end of the selection process, 19 studies were included. Most studies presented cross-sectional methodological designs (n=12). As main findings, a) traditional models (based on the subjective evaluation of coaches) are negatively criticized; b) current trend of multidimensional analysis of athletes, surpassing the previous model of individualized analysis of abilities; c) there is a greater number of cross-sectional studies in the area. In conclusion, there is a tendency towards a multidimensional approach in the identification and selection of talents in football.

En este contexto, el objetivo de este trabajo fue desarrollar una revisión sistemática de la literatura, buscando estudios relacionados con la identificación y selección de talentos en las categorías de fútbol juvenil, destacando los principales métodos y técnicas utilizadas en el proceso de identificación y selección. Esta revisión siguió las recomendaciones de la metodología PRISMA. Se utilizaron los siguientes descriptores: talento futbolístico, educación física, entrenamiento, rendimiento deportivo y habilidad. Las búsquedas se realizaron en las bases de datos Web of Science, SCOPUS, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SportDiscus, SciELO. Se encontraron un total de 1.254 estudios y, al final del proceso de selección, se incluyeron 19 estudios. La mayoría de los estudios presentaron diseños metodológicos transversales (n=12). Como principales hallazgos, a) se critican negativamente los modelos tradicionales (basados ​​en la evaluación subjetiva de los entrenadores); b) tendencia actual de análisis multidimensional de los atletas, superando el modelo anterior de análisis individualizado de habilidades; c) existe un mayor número de estudios transversales en el área. En conclusión, existe una tendencia hacia un enfoque multidimensional en la identificación y selección de talentos en el fútbol.Identificare, selezionare e sviluppare giovani talenti può garantire il successo sportivo e finanziario delle società calcistiche. In questo contesto, l'obiettivo di questo lavoro è stato quello di sviluppare una revisione sistematica della letteratura, ricercando studi relativi all'identificazione e alla selezione di talenti nelle categorie del calcio giovanile, evidenziando i principali metodi e tecniche utilizzati nel processo di identificazione e selezione. Questa revisione ha seguito le raccomandazioni della metodologia PRISMA. Sono stati utilizzati i seguenti descrittori: talento calcistico, educazione fisica, allenamento, prestazione atletica e abilità. Le ricerche sono state effettuate nei database Web of Science, SCOPUS, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SportDiscus, SciELO. Sono stati trovati un totale di 1.254 studi e, al termine del processo di selezione, sono stati inclusi 19 studi. La maggior parte degli studi ha presentato progetti metodologici trasversali (n=12). Come risultati principali, a) i modelli tradizionali (basati sulla valutazione soggettiva degli allenatori) sono criticati negativamente; b) tendenza attuale dell'analisi multidimensionale degli atleti, superando il precedente modello di analisi individualizzata delle abilità; c) c'è un maggior numero di studi trasversali nell'area.
