Continue, substitute or diversify? Family farmer’s perception about tobacco production in Vale do rio Pardo (Brazil)

In this paper, the purpose is to analyze family farmers perception about the tobacco cultivation. The reference is the decision of the producers and ex-producers placed in Vale do Rio Pardo Micro region in relation to keep or to replace this activity. The characteristic of the research was quali-quantitative, being 63 farmers interviewed. Database was studied from content analysis (qualitative) and from descriptive statistics (quantitative). As investigative way, it was utilized approaches about cognitive process, perception and decision-making related to Economics and Administration areas. It was observed the prevalent part of farmers get negative perception of tobacco culture and their decisions about to keep or to change of its cultivation are taken as result of demands of familiar reproduction or reactions to their perception about the activity. Farmers' perceptions and consequent decisions can be explained for a vary set of reasons that act to produce several behaviors. The decision for cultivating tobacco results of succession of the activity of parents and of warranties of the integrated system of production coordinated by industry. The decision of leaving the production of tobacco is resultant of a complex structure of goals established by farmers, in a more or less hierarchical way and submitted to internal and external contradictions.
