Radon measurements in non-nuclear mines

Resumo: Radon concentrations were measured in non nuclear underground mines using radon detectors under a research contract which is part of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Coordinated Research Program "Radon in the Human Environment". the measurements were carried out in two different types of mining activities: first in the underground coal mines in the southern part of Brazil. The very high concentrations found (up to 24 WL) point out to the necessity of immediate radiological protecton measures. Second, in the semi precious stones mining areas. Besides the high radon concentrations found, the social structure and amateurish kind of mining make it very difficult to be able to establish and apply legislation for this type of activity.
