Environmental Awareness Practices in Children Education using the Amazon Turtle (Podocnemis expansa)

Summary: Developing environmental awareness practices in the education of young students is essential to awaken their interest in environmental issues. The objective of the proposal presented was to raise awareness among young children in kindergarten about the importance of the Amazon Turtle (Podocnemis expansa) for the Amazonian aquatic ecosystem. The research presents a qualitative, participant approach, having as locus a Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education located in the North Zone of Manaus and the Center for Studies of the Turtles of the Amazon (CEQUA). The participating subjects were 20 (twenty) children from the second period of Early Childhood Education. The technique used to produce the data was the didactic sequence, structured in environmental awareness workshops. The data were interpreted and analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis. The results show that working on environmental awareness in the early grades of basic education is essential to form an ecological awareness in children, enabling changes in habits and attitudes.Through the didactic sequence, we managed to raise the children's awareness about the importance of the Amazon Turtle, as well as to warn about other environmental problems, such as river pollution, poaching and the threat of extinction of other species of Amazonian fauna.

El objetivo del estudio fue sensibilizar a los niños pequeños de jardín de infantes sobre la importancia de la tortuga amazónica (Podocnemis expansa) para el ecosistema acuático amazónico. La investigación presenta un abordaje cualitativo, descriptivo, teniendo como locus un Centro Municipal de Educación Infantil ubicado en la Zona Norte de Manaus y el Centro de Estudios de Chelônios da Amazônia (CEQUA). Los sujetos participantes fueron 20 (veinte) niños del segundo período de Educación Infantil. La técnica utilizada para la recolección de datos fue la secuencia didáctica, estructurada en talleres de concientización ambiental. Los datos fueron interpretados y analizados usando el Análisis de Contenido de Bardin. Los resultados muestran que trabajar la conciencia ambiental en los primeros grados de educación básica es fundamental para formar una conciencia ecológica en los niños, posibilitando cambios de hábitos y actitudes. A través de la secuencia didáctica logramos sensibilizar a los niños sobre la importancia de la Tortuga Amazónica, así como alertarlos sobre otros problemas ambientales, como la contaminación de los ríos, la caza depredadora y la amenaza de extinción de otras especies de la fauna amazónica.Desenvolver práticas de sensibilização ambiental na formação de pequenos estudantes é essencial para despertar o interesse para as problemáticas ambientais. O objetivo da proposta apresentada foi sensibilizar crianças pequenas da Educação Infantil sobre a importância da Tartaruga-da-Amazônia (Podocnemis expansa) para o ecossistema aquático amazônico. A pesquisa apresenta uma abordagem qualitativa, participante, tendo como lócus um Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil localizados na Zona Norte de Manaus e o Centro de Estudos dos Quelônios da Amazônia (CEQUA). Os sujeitos participantes foram 20 (vinte) crianças do segundo período da Educação Infantil. A técnica utilizada para produzir os dados foi a sequência didática, estruturada em oficinas de sensibilização ambiental. Os dados foram interpretados e analisados por meio da Análise de Conteúdo de Bardin. Os resultados evidenciam que trabalhar a sensibilização ambiental nas séries iniciais da educação básica é essencial para formar nas crianças uma consciência ecológica, possibilitando mudanças de hábitos e atitudes.
