Resumo: This text aims to examine the importance of the use of alternative forms of energy. Biodiesel is considered a solution to the problem of the petroleum derivates exhaustion, and also to global warming. As Brasil presents great biodiversity and a strong agriculture-based economy, the Federal Government has invested in the National Biodiesel Production Program (PNPB), a project with chances of succeeding. The project explores several energy sources, for temporary and perennial culture and residual oil. The project offers benefits for the development of the country, generating employment and raising financial income, as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

O biodiesel é apontado como uma das soluções para o esgotamento do petróleo e seus derivados e para o problema do aquecimento global, e o Brasil, por apresentar biodiversidade e forte economia agrícola, permitiu que o Governo Federal criasse o Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso de Biodiesel (PNPB) com chances de sucesso.
