School dropout at IFRJ, Arraial do Cabo Campus: the influence of socioeconomic and academic dimensions

Resumo: This paper presents the results of the research on school dropout, retention and success in the Technical Course in Computer Science Integrated to High School of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ-CAC). The aim was to evaluate the influence of the socioeconomic and academic dimension on school dropout in technical courses integrated with secondary education. The study population consisted of 122 students who evaded the course from March 2011 to December 2017. Bibliographical and documentary research was carried out to collect information on school dropout at IFRJ-CAC. Data analysis was qualitative and quantitative. The results show that the socioeconomic and academic dimensions are articulated and influence on school dropout. Therefore, investments in social and pedagogical policies that meet these issues are important strategies for school retention and success. In addition, the dissemination of factors that cause school dropout and ways of coping with it may contribute to improving school attendance and success rates.

El objetivo fue evaluar la influencia de las dimensiones socioeconómicas y académicas en el abandono de los cursos técnicos integrados en la escuela secundaria. La población de estudio consistió en 122 estudiantes que abandonaron el curso desde marzo de 2011 hasta diciembre de 2017. Se realizaron búsquedas bibliográficas y documentales para recopilar información sobre el abandono escolar en el IFRJ, Campus de Arraial do Cabo. El análisis de los datos fue cualitativo y cuantitativo. Los resultados indican que las dimensiones socioeconómicas y académicas están articuladas e influyen en la deserción. Por lo tanto, invertir en políticas sociales y pedagógicas que aborden estos temas se convierten en estrategias importantes para la permanencia y el éxito escolar. Además, los esfuerzos para publicitar los factores que causan el abandono escolar y las formas de abordarlo pueden contribuir a mejorar la permanencia escolar y las tasas de éxito.Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da pesquisa sobre evasão, permanência e êxito escolar no curso Técnico em Informática Integrado ao Ensino Médio do Instituto Federal de Educação Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio de Janeiro. O objetivo foi avaliar a influência das dimensões socioeconômica e acadêmica na evasão escolar em cursos técnicos integrados ao ensino médio. A população estudada foi de 122 estudantes que evadiram do curso no período de março de 2011 a dezembro de 2017. Foram realizadas pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais para se levantar as informações sobre evasão escolar que vêm ocorrendo no Campus Arraial do Cabo do IFRJ. A análise dos dados foi qualitativa e quantitativa. Os resultados apontam que as dimensões socioeconômica e acadêmica se articulam e influenciam a evasão escolar. Desta forma, o investimento em políticas sociais e pedagógicas que abarquem estas questões tornam-se importantes estratégias para a permanência e o êxito do estudante.
