Environmental results from the drainage of wetlands and lakes surfaces in the Campista lowland, North of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Resumo: Interventions in river environments are measures taken by men since they have become sedentary. In the Campista lowland, the main objective of these interventions was to create the ideal conditions for the establishment of the sugar agro-industry and the expansion of sugarcane cultivation areas. To achieve this, a wide drainage of the wetland and lacustrine surfaces of the region was carried out through the deployment of a network of artificial channels. Currently, it is clear that these structures acted so that they intensified the consequences of environmental disasters deflagrated by floods and droughts. Given this context, this work presents a historic review of this drainage process, as well as assessment of the environmental consequences of such interventions, especially those regarding the hydrology of river environments that characterize the low courses of rivers, and the worsening of extreme hydrological events which eventually cause environmental disasters.

En la Baixada Campista, ellas tenían como objetivo principal crear las condiciones ideales para el establecimiento de la agroindustria azucarera y la ampliación de las zonas de cultivo de la caña de azúcar. Para ello, se hizo un amplio drenaje de las superficies pantanosas y lacustres de la región mediante la implantación de una red de canales artificiales. Resulta que, en el presente, las estructuras en cuestión actuaron de tal manera que intensificaron las consecuencias de los desastres ambientales desencadenados por inundaciones y sequías. Por el consiguiente, este trabajo se propone hacer un rescate histórico de ese proceso de drenaje, así como evaluar las consecuencias ambientales derivadas de tales intervenciones, especialmente, para la hidrología de los ambientes fluviales que caracterizan los bajos cursos de los ríos y el agravamiento de eventos hidrológicos extremos desencadenantes de desastres ambientales.Intervenções em ambientes fluviais são medidas tomadas pelo homem desde que este se tornou sedentário. Na baixada Campista, elas tiveram por objetivo principal criar as condições ideais para o estabelecimento da agroindústria açucareira e a ampliação das áreas de cultivo da cana-de-açúcar. Para tanto, foi feita uma ampla drenagem das superfícies brejais e lacustres da região por meio da implantação de uma rede de canais artificiais. Verifica-se que, no presente, as estruturas em questão atuaram de tal modo a intensificar as consequências dos desastres ambientais deflagrados por inundações e secas.
