Case study of the granular activated coal filter efficiency for removal of haloacetic acids in synthetic samples

Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of activated carbon for removing haloacetic acids in synthetic water in order to simulate its formation in supply system. From a validated method by liquid-liquid extraction associated with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LLE-GC-MS), synthetic solutions were prepared in concentrations 58 and 116 μg.L-1, being the first below and the second above the maximum allowed value (80 μg.L-1) by Consolidation Ordinance n° 5 of September 28th, 2017 of de Ministry of Health. The analyzes were made on a laboratory scale and from the results obtained it can be proved that the filtration with granular activated carbon is efficient to remove haloacetic acids, since at least 77% of the by-products were removed.

A partir de un método validado por extracción líquido-líquido asociada a la cromatografía de gases junto con espectrometría de masas (LLE-GC-MS), se prepararon soluciones sintéticas en las concentraciones 58 y 116, la primera es inferior y la segunda por encima del valor máximo permitido (80) por la Ordenanza de Consolidación No 5 del 28 de septiembre de 2017 del Ministerio de Salud. Los análisis se realizaron a escala de laboratorio y a partir de los resultados obtenidos se puede demostrar que la filtración con carbón activado granular es eficiente para eliminar los ácidos haloacéticos, ya que al menos el 77% de los subproductos fueron eliminados.Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência do carvão ativado para remoção de ácidos haloacéticos em águas sintéticas a fim de simular sua formação nas redes de abastecimento. A partir de um método validado por extração líquido-líquido associado à cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massas (ELL-CG-EM), foram preparadas soluções sintéticas nas concentrações 58 e 116 μg.L-1, sendo a primeira abaixo e a segunda acima do valor máximo permitido (80 μg.L-1) pela Portaria da Consolidação n.º 5 de 28 de setembro de 2017 do Ministério da Saúde.
