Biological control of the South American rice water weevil, Oryzophagus oryzae, using light traps with Beauveria bassiana in irrigated rice field

Resumo: The South American rice water weevil, Oryzophagus oryzae (Costa Lima), is an important pest of irrigated rice in Brazil. Its larvae damage the plant root system. The practice of biological control of this insect needs to be improved. Thus, a research was carried out to verify the mortality rates of O. oryzae, by the infection of individuals with Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. in light traps set in irrigated rice field. Two traps received an apparatus of fungal contamination, with mass of B. bassiana, prepared in autoclaved rice. A third trap, without apparatus, was maintained as a control. Insects captured from October 2013 to March 2014 were kept in the laboratory to verify mortality and fungal infection, characterized by the mycelial growth on body. The mortality rate of individuals artificially infected was 73.1%, whereas in the control was 0.8% (natural infection). Light traps with apparatus of fungal contamination were effective on the biological control of O. oryzae adults.

Sus larvas, conocidas por bichera de la raíz, dañan el sistema radicular de las plantas. La práctica del control biológico de este insecto necesita ser mejorada, así se llevó a cabo una investigación con el objetivo de verificar las tasas de mortalidad de O. oryzae, infectados por Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. en trampas luminosas, instaladas en cultivo de arroz irrigado. Dos trampas recibieron aparato de contaminación fúngica, con masa de B. bassiana, preparada en arroz esterilizado en autoclave. Una tercera trampa quedó exenta, como testigo. Los insectos capturados de octubre de 2013 a marzo de 2014 se mantuvieron en laboratorio para la verificación de mortalidad e infección fúngica, caracterizada por el crecimiento micelial en las articulaciones. La mortalidad de los individuos artificialmente contaminados fue del 73,1%, mientras que en el testigo fue del 0,8% (infección natural). Las trampas luminosas con aparato de contaminación fúngica fueron eficaces en el control biológico de adultos de O. oryzae.O gorgulho aquático, Oryzophagus oryzae (Costa Lima), é praga importante nas lavouras de arroz irrigado. Suas larvas, conhecidas por bicheira-da-raiz, danificam o sistema radicular das plantas. A prática do controle biológico desse inseto precisa ser aprimorada. Assim, foi conduzida uma pesquisa objetivando verificar as taxas de mortalidade de O. oryzae, infectados por Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. em armadilhas luminosas, instaladas em lavoura de arroz irrigado. Duas armadilhas receberam aparato de contaminação fúngica, com massa de B. bassiana, preparada em arroz autoclavado. Uma terceira armadilha ficou isenta, como testemunha. Insetos capturados de outubro de 2013 a março de 2014 foram mantidos em laboratório para a verificação de mortalidade e infecção fúngica, caracterizada pelo crescimento micelial nas articulações. A mortalidade dos indivíduos artificialmente contaminados foi de 73,1%, enquanto que na testemunha foi de 0,8% (infecção natural).
