A PROPOSAL INVOLVING HISTORICAL INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITIES WITH THE JOURNAL AL-KARISMI, OF MALBA TAHAN: STUDYING MAGIC SQUARES

Resumo: The incorporation of historical documents in the field of mathematics is still scarce when it comes to their insertion in teaching. This is even more serious when we resort to the use of texts that were published by Brazilian mathematical educators, among them, the Professor Julio Cesar de Mello e Souza (1895-1974), known as Malba Tahan and for the publication of articles, textbooks, scientific books and the journal Al-Karismi. This article aims to present some didactic activities involving magic squares using the journal Al-Karismi edited by Malba Tahan in the 1940s and 1950s. To compose the activities, we used the theory of Mendes (2009) of historical investigative activity, which were validated in a course of university extension in the initial training of Mathematics teachers. Thus, a study involving the Brazilian History of Mathematics Education may contribute to an improvement in the process of mathematical learning linked mainly with historical investigative activities.

Isso se agrava quando recorremos ao uso de textos que foram publicados por educadores matemáticos brasileiros, dentre eles, o professor Júlio Cesar de Mello e Souza (1895-1974), conhecido como Malba Tahan e pela publicação de artigos, livros didáticos, livros científicos e a revista Al-Karismi. Esse artigo tem por finalidade apresentar algumas atividades didáticas envolvendo quadrados mágicos, utilizando a Revista Al-Karismi, editada por Malba Tahan, nas décadas de 1940 e 1950. Para compor as atividades, que foram validadas em um curso de extensão universitária na formação inicial de professores de matemática, utilizamos a teoria de atividade investigativa histórica de Mendes (2009).
