Resumo: This article aimed to present the socioeconomic and environmental aspects of gold mining, located in the municipality of Ecuador (RN), in the micro-region of Seridó. In addition, point out the eminent risks during kaolin extraction and health and safety conditions, diagnose the impacts generated by inappropriate practices and establish actions to improve technical, environmental and socioeconomic performance. For this, a consistent literature review that addresses the subject under study was used as a methodological procedure, together with technical visits to the region. Finally, it was suggested the need for an effective public policy and technical assistance in support of the consolidation of the local garimpeiro cooperative, Cooperative of Ore and Agriculture Workers of Ecuador and Seridó (COOTMAES) and Local Productive Arrangements (APL) as important policies that can transform the reality of mining professionals in that location.

Além disso, apontar os riscos eminentes durante a extração do caulim e as condições de saúde e segurança, diagnosticar os impactos gerados pelas práticas inadequadas e estabelecer ações para a melhoria do desempenho técnico, ambiental e socioeconômico. Para isto, foi utilizada como procedimento metodológico uma revisão de literatura consistente que aborda a temática em estudo, juntamente com visitas técnicas à região.
