Gerontological Awareness for the Teaching-scientific Work of Foreign Language Teachers with Senior Citizens

Resumo: This article aims to present the theoretical-methodological construction of the concepts of Gerontological Awareness in order to defend its importance for foreign language teachers for senior citizens. Recognizing, in our teaching-scientific work, the limitations of professionals to work in such field, we narratively present our experiences in promoting interventionist actions in the form of workshops and lectures in university spaces with Language and Literature undergraduate students. Our research path evidences the development of theoretical-practical constructs throughout our interventionist work, which aligned with the concept of Educational Gerontology and the strategies to combat ageism related to ageism presented by the World Health Organization, reveal themselves as important and necessary. Furthermore, our observations point to the growth of investigative and professional interest of foreign language teachers in training, who participated in our Gerontological Awareness interventions, on teaching-learning experiences with/by elderly people. We then discuss the hypothesis that the lack of approximation of (future) language education professionals with discussions and reflections on old age (as a natural stage of life) and aging (as a multifactorial process) make elderly learners of languages invisible, corroborated by the narrative of our experiences in continuum. Old Age.Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar a construção teórico-metodológica dos conceitos de Consciência e Conscientização Gerontológica de modo a defender sua importância para professores de línguas estrangeiras (LE) para o público da Terceira Idade. Reconhecendo, em nossa atuação docente-científica, as limitações da formação desses profissionais para o trabalho nesse contexto, apresentamos narrativamente nossas experiências na promoção de ações intervencionistas na forma de oficinas e palestras em espaços universitários com alunos de graduação em Letras. Nosso percurso de pesquisa evidencia o desenvolvimento de construtos teórico-práticos ao longo de nosso trabalho intervencionista que, alinhados ao conceito de Gerontologia Educacional e às estratégias de combate ao preconceito relacionado à idade (ageismo) apresentadas pela Organização Mundial da Saúde, revelam-se como importantes e necessários. Ademais, nossas observações apontam para o crescimento do interesse investigativo e profissional de professores de LE em formação, que participaram de nossas intervenções de Conscientização Gerontológica, sobre as experiências de ensino-aprendizagem com/por pessoas idosas. Discutimos, então, sobre a hipótese de que a falta de aproximação de (futuros) profissionais da educação linguística com discussões e reflexões sobre a velhice (como estágio natural da vida) e o envelhecimento (como processo multifatorial) acabam por invisibilizar pessoas idosas em situação de aprendizagem de LE, corroborada pela narrativa de nossas experiências em continuidade.
