Statistics in Elementary Education: diagnosed weaknesses

Resumo: This work presents a section of a dissertation research conducted in a 9th-grade class of Elementary School. Through a questionnaire with 10 questions, we aimed to investigate which skills related to statistical literacy the students developed during the years that make up Elementary School. The evaluated skills were selected as proposed by the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC), in the subject of mathematics. The research adopts a mixed approach and is justified by the need to understand which weaknesses need to be overcome in the teaching and learning process of statistical concepts in Basic Education. In this way, we promote the continuous pursuit of improvement through the application and adaptation of new methodologies, activities, and strategies. The results obtained indicated that the majority of the surveyed class developed skills related to interpreting bar charts, pie charts, and simple table interpretation. However, they encountered difficulties when using measures of central tendency (mean and mode), interpreting line graphs, double-entry tables, and interpreting statements. As a possibility to assist in overcoming the identified weaknesses, the use of a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (UEPS) is suggested, which includes the development and execution of a statistical research project with students, as well as the use of digital spreadsheets, adopting an interdisciplinary perspective.

A través de un cuestionario con 10 preguntas, se buscó averiguar qué habilidades relacionadas con la alfabetización estadística desarrollaron los estudiantes durante los años que componen la Educación Primaria. Las habilidades evaluadas fueron seleccionadas de acuerdo con lo propuesto por la Base Nacional Común Curricular (BNCC), en la asignatura de Matemáticas. La investigación adopta un enfoque mixto y se justifica por la necesidad de conocer qué debilidades deben superarse en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de conceptos estadísticos en la Educación Básica. De esta manera, se promueve la búsqueda continua de mejoras a través de la aplicación y adaptación de nuevas metodologías, actividades y estrategias. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que la mayoría de la clase encuestada desarrolló habilidades relacionadas con la interpretación de gráficos de barras, gráficos circulares e interpretación de tablas simples. Sin embargo, encontraron dificultades al usar medidas de tendencia central (media y moda), interpretar gráficos de líneas, tablas de doble entrada e interpretar enunciados. Como posibilidad para ayudar a superar las debilidades identificadas, se sugiere el uso de una Unidad de Enseñanza Potencialmente Significativa (UEPS), que incluye la elaboración y ejecución de una investigación estadística con los estudiantes, así como el uso de hojas de cálculo digitales, adoptando una perspectiva interdisciplinaria.O presente trabalho apresenta o recorte de uma pesquisa de dissertação aplicada em uma turma do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental. Por meio de um questionário com 10 questões, buscou-se averiguar quais habilidades relacionadas ao letramento estatístico os alunos desenvolveram durante os anos que compõem o Ensino Fundamental. As habilidades avaliadas foram selecionadas conforme proposto pela Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC), na disciplina de matemática. A pesquisa adota uma abordagem mista e justifica-se pela necessidade de conhecer quais fragilidades devem ser superadas no processo de ensino-aprendizagem de conceitos estatísticos na Educação Básica. Dessa forma, se favorece a busca contínua pela melhoria por meio da aplicação e adaptação de novas metodologias, atividades e estratégias. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a maior parte da turma pesquisada desenvolveu habilidades relacionadas à interpretação de gráficos de colunas, gráficos de setores e interpretação de tabelas simples. No entanto, apresentaram dificuldades ao utilizar medidas de tendência central (média e moda), interpretar gráficos de linhas, tabelas de dupla entrada e interpretar enunciados.
