“ANJOS DA CARIDADE”: AS MULHERES INTEGRANTES DO CENTRO ABOLICIONISTA DE PORTO ALEGRE (SÉC. XIX/ RS)

RESUMOO artigo apresenta um estudo sobre o perfil das mulheres integrantes do Centro Abolicionista de Porto Alegre, denominadas pelo secretário da agremiação como “Anjos da Caridade”. Buscamos compor uma cartografia social das 23 senhoras que identificamos como contribuintes no Centro, desvelando a naturalidade, faixa etária, status civil e filiação do grupo. Para tanto, foram consultadas fontes de naturezas diversas, como habilitações de casamento, registros de batismo e casamento, inventários post-mortem, testamentos, processos-crime, cartas de alforrias e imprensa. De modo geral, constatamos que se tratavam de jovens mulheres, sendo a maioria porto-alegrense, recém-casadas ou em vias de contrair matrimônio. Provenientes das classes abastadas e médias, essas abolicionistas tiveram acesso e domínio da cultura letrada, o que as tornou aptas para o exercício das atividades no Centro.Palavras-chaves: Mulheres. Centro Abolicionista.ABSTRACTThe article presents a study on the profile of women members of the Abolitionist Center in Porto Alegre, called by the secretary of the association as “Anjos da Caridade”. We seek to compose a social cartography of the 23 ladies we identified as contributors in the Center, in order to unveil the group’s naturalness, age group, civil status and affiliation. To this end, sources of various kinds were consulted, such as marriage qualifications, baptism and marriage records, post-mortem inventories, wills, criminal proceedings, letters of freedom and the press. In general, we found that they were young women, most of them from Porto Alegre, newlyweds or in the process of getting married. Coming from the wealthy and middle classes, these abolitionists had access to and mastered the literate culture, which made them able to carry out activities in the Center.
