Performance evaluation of a fog computing solution for smart health environments

Resumo: | Cloud computing has been a predominant approach for the development of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. However, to meet the requirements of real-time and latencysensitive applications in healthcare, a new computing paradigm that follows a cloud computing approach, called fog computing, demonstrates to be an effective tool by extending the cloud resources to the edge of the network. This work studies the contribution of the fog computing paradigm applied to healthcare, highlighting its main benefits regarding latency, network usage, and power consumption. Based on these parameters, a fog-assisted health monitoring system is proposed, and its performance evaluation and demonstration are carried out. The results demonstrate the potential enhancement of this approach in minimising data traffic in the core of the network because data is locally analysed. Further, it improves security and privacy of sensitive health information, once the data is kept in the local premises. |

No entanto, para atender aos requisitos de aplica????es em tempo real e sens??veis ?? lat??ncia nos servi??os de sa??de, um novo paradigma de computa????o que segue uma abordagem da computa????o em nuvem, chamado de computa????o em nevoeiro ou em ingl??s como ?? mais conhecido, fog computing, demonstra ser uma ferramenta eficaz estendendo os recursos da nuvem at?? a borda da rede. Este trabalho apresenta a contribui????o do paradigma da computa????o em nevoeiro aplicada ao sistema de sa??de, destacando seus principais benef??cios em rela????o ?? lat??ncia, uso da rede e consumo de energia. Com base nestes par??metros, um sistema de monitoramento de sa??de baseado na computa????o em nevoeiro ?? proposto, e sua avalia????o de desempenho ?? apresentada atrav??s do desenvolvimento de um prot??tipo. Os resultados exprimem o potencial aprimoramento dessa abordagem na minimiza????o do tr??fego de dados no core da rede, uma vez que os dados s??o analisados localmente.
